For years I've been collecting wry chuckles in pop -- little laughs in songs as the singer reflects on the wisdom of the lyrics they've just delivered. They are, in many ways *, a window into the artist's soul.
The problem is, I forget to write them down. But now I have somewhere to put them whenever I think of them.
So here it is: after several years of effort, the list of all the wry pop chuckles I can remember:
Your Song -- Elton John
'If I were a sculptor, heh, but then again no.'
Ironic -- Alanis Morrisette
'It's like meeting the man of you dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife, heh.'
Something by REM I can't quite recall...
Not the bit where Michael Stipe giggles in the Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, another one.
The Postman Pat theme tune
'There'll be knock [knock-knock], ring [ding-dong], letters through your door, heh.'
And, um, that's it.
*In no ways.
UPDATE: May have found another, although it's not really pop. Hugh Laurie on Buddy Bolden Blues has a little wry chuckle as he sings 'Gimme the money girl, or I'm gonna... heh-I'm gonna take it away'.
I knew having a blog would be handy.
